Coffee plantations

Overview

Coffee beans are the seeds of the cherry-like fruit of the coffee plant, cultivated in a swathe of countries across southern and eastern Africa.

Coffee plantations tend to be very scenic places, largely because the main crop is usually shaded by majestic trees making for some gorgeous scenery. The plants needs relatively high rainfall and a warm, equatorial climate, which means that in the plantations tend to be found on the slopes of well-watered mountains.

The process of taking the raw fruit and taking it through to the finished product can very interesting to observe.

Unfortunately coffee is responsible for a considerable amount of deforestation in equatorial regions, which is so why many people now refrain from drinking it on ethical grounds.

Some of the better small coffee estates in Africa service the very upper end of the coffee production chain and generate prize-winning product. The lodges in the area are therefore often able to offer an unusually high quality brew.

We often recommend staying at a good coffee plantation lodge as it can really introduce a different dimension to a safari, a break from wildlife viewing and a chance to appreciate the magic of rural Africa.

Trip planning

Coffee plantations are most commonly encountered in the Serengeti region of Tanzania, particularly around the town of Arusha, where Arusha Coffee Lodge is at the heart of a fully operational and rather celebrated plantation.

A little further east, on the eastern slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands lies the renowned and historic Gibbs Farm, one of the most celebrated farm-stays in Africa.
